Beware that adware can enter your computer without you knowing it, and that it is necessary to know how to get rid of adware.  Adware is a term for advertising software.  While the term itself sounds innocent and harmless, what it can do to your computer is the reverse.  This is because most of the adware have gone beyond their original intent of making it possible for users to enjoy free software.

Today, adware becomes a type of spyware that snoops on the browsing habits of internet users and bombard them with ad displays.  These adware programs can go as far as stealing your private information and identity.  The good thing is you can get rid of adware without having to spend for it.  Here is how.

  1. The first step in getting rid of adware is to disconnect your computer from the internet.  Unplug the Ethernet cable (usually a yellow cable) that connects your computer to the modem or router.  Disconnecting your computer from the internet will prevent the adware to contact their site and block you attempt to get rid of them.

  2. Next, go to your control panel to access the list of programs installed in your computer.  Go over the list.  If there are programs that you are not familiar with or you cannot identify, uninstall the program.  These are most likely to be adware programs that have entered your computer.  Even without your computer prompting you to do, it is always best to restart it after any uninstallation.

  3. A crucial step on how to get rid of adware is to verify that the list of programs is completely free of adware.  To do this, go back to your control panel and access the list.  Repeat the process of uninstalling and restarting your computer if you are still seeing unrecognizable programs that are most likely to be adware.  Adware can be very stubborn and hard to remove.

  4. Use the free built-in tool that Microsoft provides with your operating system.  This will save you time and effort in uninstalling and restarting your computer to remove adware.  Run Windows Defender to scan your computer for potential adware and spyware.  You can do a quick scan or a full scan of your computer.

  5. There is another way to protect your computer from adware and other malicious software.  This anti-adware/spyware also comes free from Microsoft and offers more comprehensive protection than Windows Defender.

You can download the Microsoft Security Essentials online to guard your computer against the evil software programs lurking to wreak havoc.

For additional protection, you can install legitimate third party anti-malware programs.  Some programs may require you to deactivate Microsoft Security Essentials; others can run in synergy with it.

On top of the aforementioned steps, you can still increase your protection and prevent adware to enter your computer.  For instance, be very conservative in downloading programs from the internet especially those that are free to download.  Verify the legitimacy of the publisher prior to downloading.

Make sure that your internet browser has the right security settings.  Disable your browser from automatically downloading programs on the internet.  Additionally, make sure that your computer does not automatically run programs or applications.  Increase your browser’s security depending on your browsing habits.

Your Windows operating system regularly sends updates and patches to fix any loopholes in the system.  Set your system to run the updates automatically.  Always see to it that whatever programs or applications you install in your computer are legitimate and free from adware so you will never have to worry about how to get rid of adware.
